Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Almost always, yes — social platforms, SMS and search engines all count them. Both totals are shown, because some academic and publishing guidelines ask for the figure without spaces.

Why does an emoji count as more than one character?

Many emoji are stored as several code units internally, and skin-tone or family emoji are sequences of several joined together. This tool counts what people see as one character, which is what platforms generally enforce.

How many characters can an SMS hold?

160 for plain Latin text. Adding a single emoji or accented character switches the message to a different encoding and drops the limit to 70, which is why one emoji can suddenly cost you a second message.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150–160 characters. Google truncates by pixel width rather than a strict count, so a description of mostly wide capitals gets cut sooner than one of narrow lowercase letters.

Is my text stored?

No. It never leaves your browser tab.
