Frequently asked questions

Will converting to PNG improve the quality?

No, and it is worth understanding why. JPEG compression permanently discards detail when the photo is first saved. Converting to PNG preserves whatever is left perfectly, but it cannot recover what was already thrown away.

Why is the PNG bigger than the original JPG?

This is expected. PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG approximates them to save space. For photographs, a PNG is commonly two to five times larger than the JPG it came from.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. PNG supports transparency, but a JPG has no transparency data to carry over, so the background stays exactly as it appears in the original.

Can I convert several images at once?
