Lorem Ipsum Generator

Because readable copy hijacks the review. Put real sentences in a mockup and everyone discusses the wording; put lorem ipsum in and they look at the spacing, the hierarchy and the line length, which is what a layout review is for. It also stops draft copy from accidentally shipping.

Not as written. It comes from Cicero's "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" from 45 BC, but the words were deliberately garbled and cut — the famous opening is a fragment of "dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet", which is why it begins mid-word.

It is the convention, and it makes the text instantly recognisable as a placeholder, which is worth something. The toggle is there because that opening is also the most over-familiar sentence in design — turn it off and the block reads as generic Latin instead.

For a paragraph of body copy, three to five sentences. For a card or a list item, five to ten words. For a page mockup, three or four paragraphs is usually enough to show how the layout behaves once it fills up.
