Remove Audio from Video online

Sometimes the sound is the problem. Background conversation you did not mean to record, music that would get a post taken down, a screen recording with your notifications chiming through it, or a clip destined for a page where it will autoplay silently anyway. Removing the audio track entirely is cleaner than turning the volume down — the sound is not in the file at all, so nothing can play it back — and it makes the file smaller into the bargain.

How to use remove audio from video

  1. Add your video

Drag in an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file, or click to choose one.

  2. Remove the audio

The tool checks the file has a sound track, then rebuilds it without one.

  3. Download the silent version

Your original stays exactly as it was.

Frequently asked questions

Is this different from muting the player?

Completely. Muting is a setting on whoever is watching, and the sound is still in the file — anyone can turn it back up, and any platform that re-encodes it keeps it. This removes the audio track from the file, so there is nothing left to play.

Does the picture change at all?

The video is re-encoded, so there is the same small generational loss as any conversion, and the framing, length and resolution are untouched. If keeping the picture pristine matters, use the High quality setting.

How much smaller does it get?

Usually between 5 and 15 percent. Audio is a small share of a video file — speech at a normal bitrate is a fraction of what the picture costs. If you need a real reduction, trim the length or use the compressor; removing the audio is about the sound, not the size.

Can I get the audio back afterwards?

Not from the muted file — the track is gone. Keep your original, or run it through the video-to-MP3 tool first if you want the sound saved separately before you strip it.

Will this help with a copyright claim?

It removes the audio from the file you upload, which is what automated music matching listens to. Whether that resolves a particular claim is between you and the platform, and anything already published needs to be replaced rather than edited in place.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The file is opened, rebuilt and handed back entirely inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored.
