Frequently asked questions
PNG or JPG — which should I convert to?
PNG for anything built from text, lines or flat colour: it is lossless, so edges stay crisp and nothing is smeared. JPG for pages that are mostly photographs, where it produces much smaller files at a quality nobody will notice. If a page is mixed, PNG is the safer choice.
Why is my PNG so much larger than a JPG would be?
Because nothing is thrown away. JPEG reaches its small sizes by discarding detail your eye is unlikely to miss; PNG stores every pixel exactly. On a dense, photographic page the difference can be five or ten times. On a page of text it is often far smaller, and sometimes PNG wins outright.
What does the transparent background actually do?
A PDF page describes ink, not paper — the white you see is assumed rather than stored. Turning transparency on renders only the ink and leaves the rest of the image clear, so you can lay the page over a slide, a coloured panel or another image without a white box around it. Turn it off and you get the usual white page.
The transparent PNG looks black when I open it. Why?
Some viewers paint transparent areas black instead of showing a checkerboard, so dark text on a clear background can look like a solid black rectangle. Drop the file onto a slide or a web page and it will composite correctly. If that keeps catching you out, export with the white background instead.
Will the text still be selectable?
No. Converting a page to an image turns letters into pixels, so nothing in the result can be selected, searched or copied. That is inherent to the conversion. Keep the original PDF if you need the text back.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Pages are rendered in your browser by the same engine that displays PDFs on the web, so the document never leaves your device. It works offline once the page has loaded.
