Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. 20% of 150 is 0.2 × 150 = 30.

How do I calculate percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% up.

Why isn't a 10% rise followed by a 10% fall back to the start?

The fall is 10% of a bigger number. 100 up 10% is 110; 110 down 10% is 99.

How do I take a percentage off?

Use “Add / take off %” with a minus sign: −15% of 200 leaves 170.
