Business Name Checklist Before You Register
By TinyTools Team · · 7 min read

Before you register a business name, run it through a short checklist: is it easy to say and spell, does it mean anything unfortunate, is it too close to an existing business, are the social handles and domain free, and will it still fit if you grow? This business name checklist covers twelve checks in plain language, so you catch problems while changing the name is still free, not after you have paid for registration, signage and printing.
Why check before you register
Once a name is registered and printed on everything, changing it means new paperwork, new banners, new packaging and the slow job of telling customers who already know you by the old name. A few hours of checking now is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy for your brand.
The checklist below is split into three groups: how the name works for customers, whether it is genuinely available, and whether it will last.
Business name checklist part 1: does it work for customers?
1. Can people spell it after hearing it once?
Most new customers will hear your name before they see it: from a friend, in a market, or in a voice note. Say the name to three people and ask them to type it. If two of them get it wrong, expect a lot of lost searches.
2. Is it easy to pronounce?
If customers are not sure how to say it, they will avoid saying it, and that kills word of mouth. Watch out for clusters of consonants, silent letters and words borrowed from languages your customers do not speak.
3. Does it mean anything awkward?
Check the name, and any shortened version of it, in the languages your customers use: English, pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or any other. Ask a few people from different backgrounds. Also check what the initials spell, since customers love to shorten names.
4. Does it suggest the right kind of business?
Show the name to someone with no context and ask what you sell. They do not need to guess exactly, but they should not guess something completely different. A catering business called "Swift Logistics Hub" will confuse people for years.
Part 2: is it genuinely available?
5. Is it free on the official register?
In Nigeria, business names and companies are registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. Search for your name, and close variations of it, using the availability search on the CAC website. Requirements change from time to time, and similar or restricted names may be refused, so confirm the current rules there rather than relying on what a friend did a few years ago. If you are unsure whether to register a business name or a company, the CAC site and an accountant or lawyer are the right people to ask.
6. Is it too similar to another business?
Even if your exact name is available, a near-identical one in the same trade can cause confusion and disputes. Search the name on Google, Instagram, Facebook and Google Maps. If "Mama Tee Foods" is already a well-known caterer in your city, "Mama T Foods" is asking for trouble.
7. Could it clash with a trademark?
Avoid names that borrow from big brands, even playfully. Using a famous brand name or something close to it can lead to a demand to stop using it, which is far more expensive after you have built a customer base. If you have any doubt, get professional advice before you register.
8. Are the social media handles free?
Check the platforms your customers actually use, which for many Nigerian small businesses means Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and WhatsApp Business. Try to get the same handle everywhere. If the exact name is taken, a small, consistent variation (adding "ng" or your city) is better than a different handle on every platform.
9. Is a matching domain available?
Even if you do not need a website yet, a domain name is cheap to hold and frustrating to lose. Check whether the .com, .ng or .com.ng version is available. If it is taken by an active business, that is another sign the name may be too crowded.
Part 3: will it last?
10. Does it leave room to grow?
Names tied to one product, one street or one price point can box you in. "Surulere Shawarma Spot" is perfect until you open a second branch in Ikeja or add small chops to the menu. Think about where the business could reasonably be in five years.
11. Will it date quickly?
Slang, trending phrases and references to the current year feel fresh now and tired later. Aim for something you would still be comfortable saying in a meeting with a bank or a large client.
12. Does it look good small and in print?
Your name will appear on receipts, invoices, packaging labels, WhatsApp profile pictures and possibly a small shop sign. Type it in a plain font at a small size and see whether it is still clear. Very long names tend to get squashed or cut off.
How to find backup names with TinyTools
It is sensible to have two or three backup names ready in case your first choice fails one of these checks. The Business Name Generator gives you a fresh batch of ideas in seconds.
- Enter the keywords that describe your business, such as "fabric" and "Aba".
- Choose your industry and a style: modern, classic, playful or short.
- Copy the names you like into a note.
- Run each one through the checklist above, starting with the quick checks (spelling, meaning) before the slower ones (registration, handles, domains).
The generator suggests names only. It does not check business registration or domain availability, which is exactly why the checklist matters.
A quick way to run the checklist
You do not need special software. Make a simple table on paper or in a notes app with your shortlisted names down the side and the twelve checks across the top. Tick or cross each box. A name with a cross in any of checks 5, 6 or 7 should usually be dropped immediately, because those are about whether you can use the name at all. Crosses elsewhere are judgement calls.
If you still have several names standing, read how to name your business for ways to test a shortlist on real customers.
After you register
Once the name is yours, use it consistently. Same spelling, same capitals and the same logo on every invoice, receipt and social profile. The Invoice Generator and Receipt Maker both remember your business details in your browser, so your name and logo appear the same way on every document without retyping. Our guide to the paperwork every small business needs covers what else to set up early.
Frequently asked questions
What should I check before registering a business name?
At minimum: that it is easy to spell and say, that it does not mean anything awkward, that it is available on the official register, that it is not too close to an existing business or brand, and that you can get matching social handles.
How many name options should I have ready?
Have at least two or three backups that have already passed the checklist. If your first choice is unavailable, you can move straight to the next instead of starting again.
Can two businesses have similar names?
Sometimes, but it is risky. Even where it is allowed, customers may confuse you, and the older business may object. Aim for a name that is clearly distinct within your trade and area.
Do I need a website domain if I only sell on WhatsApp?
Not immediately, but holding a matching domain protects the name and keeps the option open. It also stops someone else using it later.
Where do I check if a business name is available in Nigeria?
On the Corporate Affairs Commission website. Always confirm current requirements, fees and procedures there, since they can change.
A name that passes all twelve checks is one you can build on with confidence. If your favourite fails, generate a fresh set of options with the Business Name Generator and run the list again.
