How to Edit Documents on Your Phone (PDFs and Images)

By TinyTools Team · · 6 min read

Hands holding a smartphone, editing a PDF document with a finger, with PDF and image file icons floating beside the screen.

You can edit documents on your phone without installing anything: open a browser-based tool in Chrome or Safari, pick the file from your gallery or downloads, and save the result back to your phone. That covers most everyday jobs, such as turning photos of pages into one PDF, shrinking a file for WhatsApp or a portal, fixing sideways pages, merging documents and resizing pictures. This guide walks through each task, with tips for getting good results on a small screen.

Why edit documents on your phone in the browser

For a lot of people the phone is the only computer they have, or the one that is always to hand. Installing a separate app for every document job fills up storage, and many apps ask for an account or want to upload your files.

Browser-based tools avoid most of that:

  • Nothing to install. Open the page, use the tool, close the tab.
  • No sign-up. Every TinyTools tool works without an account.
  • Your files stay on your phone. They are processed in the browser rather than sent to a server, which also saves mobile data.

The trade-off is that your phone does the processing itself, so very large files can be slow on older handsets. For everyday documents this is rarely a problem.

What "editing documents on your phone" can mean

It helps to be clear about what these tools do. They work on files as a whole: combining, converting, compressing, rotating and resizing. They do not let you change the words inside a PDF directly. If you need to change the text, convert the PDF to Word first, edit it in a word processor app, then turn it back into a PDF.

Here are the jobs you can do easily from a phone browser.

How to turn photos into a PDF on your phone with TinyTools

This is the most common phone document job: you have photographed a few pages and need to send one tidy file. JPG to PDF combines your pictures into a single PDF in the order you choose.

  1. Tap the box and choose your photos from your gallery or files. JPG, PNG and WebP all work.
  2. Use the arrows to put the pages in order. Each image becomes one page, top to bottom.
  3. Choose a page size. A4 (or US Letter) centres each photo on a standard page, best for anything official or printable. Fit to image makes each page exactly the size of the photo, with no white border.
  4. Download the PDF. It saves to your phone like any other download, usually in the Downloads folder on Android or the Files app on iPhone.

The PDF is roughly the combined size of your photos, so if it is too big to send, compress it next. There is more on getting clean scans in how to scan documents with your phone to PDF, and in how to combine photos into one PDF.

Tips for photographing documents

The quality of your PDF depends on the photos you start with. A few habits make a big difference:

  • Use daylight. Stand near a window rather than under a yellow bulb. Avoid using the flash, which causes glare on glossy paper.
  • Lay the page flat on a dark, plain surface so the edges stand out.
  • Hold the phone directly above the page, parallel to it, not at an angle.
  • Fill the frame with the page, leaving a small margin.
  • Check every shot before moving on. Zoom in to make sure the text is sharp.

Other document jobs you can do on your phone

Make a PDF smaller

Portals, email and WhatsApp all have size limits. Compress PDF shrinks the photos and scans inside a PDF, which is usually where the size comes from. The Balanced setting leaves text sharp and selectable; Maximum makes the smallest file by turning pages into images.

Fix sideways or upside-down pages

Rotating a page in your phone's PDF viewer usually only changes how you see it, not the file itself, so the person you send it to still sees it sideways. Rotate PDF changes the pages themselves. You can turn every page, or only the ones you list, such as 2, 5. There is no loss of quality.

Combine several PDFs into one

If a form asks for one upload but you have your certificate, transcript and ID as separate PDFs, Merge PDF joins them in the order you choose. Pages are copied across as they are, so nothing changes in quality.

Pull out the pages you need

Split PDF extracts a page range, for example just pages 3 to 5 of a long document, or breaks it into single pages.

Resize or shrink a photo

Forms often ask for a photo of a certain size in pixels or under a certain size in KB. Resize Image sets an exact width and height with the aspect ratio locked so nothing looks stretched. To reduce the file size further without changing the dimensions, use Compress Image, which also removes hidden location data from the photo.

Edit the text in a PDF

As mentioned above, convert it first. PDF to Word turns a text-based PDF into an editable .docx file you can open in any word processor app on your phone. It cannot read scanned PDFs, because those are pictures of text rather than text.

Getting the best results on a phone

  • Close other apps before working on a large file, to free up memory.
  • Keep the screen on while a file is processing. If your phone locks or you switch away, the browser may pause or reload the page.
  • Use Wi-Fi to load the page if your data is limited. Your files are not uploaded, but the tool's page still has to load.
  • Rename the download to something clear before sending it, for example Adaeze_Okeke_Transcript.pdf.
  • Open the result before sending it. Scroll through every page to check order, rotation and readability.

A note for iPhone users

iPhones often save photos in the HEIC format. If a tool will not accept one of your photos, the simplest fix is to change your camera's format setting to Most Compatible, which saves new photos as JPG. You can also take a screenshot of the photo as a quick workaround, although that may reduce quality.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit a PDF on my phone for free?

Yes, for jobs like combining, compressing, rotating, splitting and converting. Changing the actual words inside a PDF needs a conversion to Word first, then editing in a word processor app.

How do I turn pictures into a PDF on my phone?

Open JPG to PDF in your phone browser, select your photos, put them in order, choose a page size and download the PDF.

Where do downloaded files go on my phone?

Usually the Downloads folder on Android, viewable in your Files app, and the Downloads folder in the Files app on iPhone. Your browser's download list will also show it.

Why is the PDF I made from photos so big?

The photos are placed into the PDF as they are, so the PDF is about the same size as all the photos together. Run it through Compress PDF to make it smaller.

Are my documents uploaded when I use these tools?

  1. Each file is read and processed in your phone's browser and never sent to a server. Closing the page clears it from memory.

Your phone can handle most document jobs on its own. Next time you need to send several pages as one file, open JPG to PDF in your browser and do it in under a minute.
